I was on the night shift. 10.00 pm to 6 am. And one of the jobs on nights is to clean the offices. It’s usually the last item before clean up and clock out. There is also a 15-minute take over time to update the oncoming man. I had almost finished the offices with a few minutes to spare and was thinking to do a little extra. But the Lord said, “No. You haven’t the time. Something is about to happen.”
So, I headed for the shop floor and asked, “Is there anything I can do to stop it?”
“Yes. If you are diligent.”
Now ‘diligent’ rang a bell. The grinders, and there are quite a few, are cooled with oil that discharges into a small holding tank on the rear of the machines. The used oil enters the tank via a small metal filter. Because there is swarf in with the parts being ground these filters can become clogged and if not cleared in time, overflow into the pan in which each machine sits. If this overflows on to the floor we have a major incident which would disrupt the impending shift change. Oil on floor is our main Health and Safety priority to avoid serious falls. Knowing this, although it was not one of my duties, I had made it my business to check them when passing. So I headed for the grinders.
Sure enough, I found four about to overflow. A simple remove and tap out the swarf averted a major incident at the worst possible time.
All glory to God on high. He is diligent in the extreme, and we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
